Summary/Abstract: Chantal Mouffe lays out a theoretical frame marking her approach to the themes she analyses in the text: the political as antagonism. Since all forms of political identities contain the we/they distinction, this means that the possibility of appearance of antagonism can never be eliminated. It is therefore an illusion to believe in the advent of a society from which antagonism would have been eradicated. Agonism is a we/they relationship where the conflicting parties, although acknowledging that there is no rational solution to their conflict, nevertheless recognize the legitimacy of their apponents. They are zadversaries not enemies. This means that, while in conflict, they see themselves as members of the same political association, as sharing a common symbolic space within which the conflict takes place
