Summary/Abstract: Achieving gender equality represents one of the prerequisites that a modern society should strive to achieve, if it aims to attain economic development, reduction of poverty rate and raised standards of living. Gender equality includes equal visibility, empowerment and participation of women and men in all spheres of public and personal life, and represents one of the fundamental principles of human rights and freedoms. As a signatory to numerous conventions such as the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Beijing Declaration, Bosnia and Herzegovina assumed the responsibility of undertaking all adequate measures to eliminate discrimination against women, and to introduce the equality principle in its constitutions and laws.
