Summary/Abstract: For the Romanian population of Transylvania, whose cultural horizon was exclusively that of folk culture, the latter half of the 19th century marked the first opening toward European and national values, aimed at placing it on a par with the other nations of the Austrian-Habsburg Empire. The many-folded activity of the Astra association had a decisive role in the cultural emancipation of the Romanian population, mostly through the founding of institutions that will be instrumental in the shaping of the cultural destiny of the Transylvanian Romanians. The outstanding intellectuals who run Transylvania Review were fully aware of the important role of that publication and took strides at bettering and diversifying its contents. The texts published in the review would mirror and secure the prestige of the most representative Romanian cultural society in Transylvania. This paper pinpoints the program of Transylvania Review, focusing, among other, on language and literature issues, as well as on various aspects of local and world theatre production.
