Summary/Abstract: The theoretical study is a part of the research whose aim is to determine the relevance of word-formation to instructional text comprehension. The corresponding parts of the study define and clarify the following key concepts – learning from text, text comprehension, and, word-formation motivation as a basic principle of Slovak word-formation, as well as the processes,functions, models, levels, strategies and other concepts and aspects associated with them. Relying on the theoretical sources and empirical researches in linguistics, psycholinguistics, language pedagogy, cognitive sciences, pedagogical and psychological sciences the author points out at the importance of word-formation in the process of text comprehension. The aim of the study is to present an overview of the existing knowledge base and research findings in those areas and, on the basis of this, to highlight the possibilities of using word-formation motivation in the process of text comprehension, in the process of developing cognitive functions and in acquiring metacognitive (learning) strategies.
