Summary/Abstract: The Danube Delta is the largest wetland area of Europe, representing a region of international importance, being particularly fragile at the same time. An important step in establishing the new regime for the protection and conservation of the deltaic environment was the establishment of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and the Danube Delta Master Plan. All these aspects have led us choose this topic in order to develop it as a research theme for the present article, in which we will address the theoretical and practical aspects so as to express our own view regarding the Danube Delta. In the following, we set out to identify how the diversity of the tourism potential, either natural or anthropic, is exploited by the tourism industry and whether ecotourism and sustainable development are viable alternatives for the development of the area. For this purpose we used as research methods: observation, analysis and synthesis. The conclusions we reached after the scientific endeavor largely confirm the hypothesis that the Danube Delta's notoriety failed to maximize its tourism potential, with new development measures being needed.
