Summary/Abstract: The musical life in Western Romania in the fi rst half of the 20th century was oneof reference in the local area. The Romanian musical orthodoxy was representedby the illustrious teacher and conductor Nicolae Firu. His life, activity and workare intertwined with the great events of the Romanian people: the vicissitudes ofthe time during the Austro-Hungarian regime until the Great Union (1918), as wellas the period of religious and cultural inter-war fl owering. He was also a leadingrepresentative of the monodic and polyphonic church music from the western partof Romania, contributing through his activity and work to development of themusical literature, as well as to the prestigious concerts held with the “Hilaria” Choirthroughout the Romanian space before and beyond the mountains.
