Summary/Abstract: In this article, we analyse the first results of the school reform in the Kazan vicegerency, realized by the government of Catherine II in the 1780s. The research is based on the archival documents: the semi-annual records about the state of schools and the historical records about the state of public schools in the Kazan vicegerency. We examine the process of preparation for the opening of the Kazan main public school, describe its teaching staff and the social composition of pupils. We also reveal the problems connected with the financial support of public schools, when the donations of local philanthropists were the main source of their material support.
