The truth commission in the process of national reconciliation

Summary/Abstract: Over the last 20 years, a number of countries that have gone through a period of widespread and systematic human rights abuses have chosen the so-called "truth commissions" as one of the instruments of national reconciliation. The first commission to genuinely arouse international interest operated in Argentina from 1983-84 to investigate cases of illegal disappearances. However, the name of the Truth Commission did not take root until the mid-1990s, after the Truth Commission for Salvador published its report.
