Summary/Abstract: The article dwells on the Bulgarian reception of India and its culture in the period of socialist, and more particularly from the 1960s to the 1980s. Research focuses on the travelogues compiled by Bulgarians who had the opportunity to visit this distant and exotic country thanks to a Cultural Agreement concluded between Bulgaria and India in 1963. The author has analysed the travelogues The Dance of Shiva. Unsent Letters from India („Танцът на Шива. Неизпратени писма от Индия“) by Anastas Stoyanov (1970) and Blue Lotus from India. Travel Notes („Син лотос от Индия. Пътни бележки“) by Nadya Mihailova (1983). The researcher points out that, regardless of the individual differences and the time in which these books were written, they bear all typological features of the way Bulgarians perceive India. It is described as a unique blend of reality and the fabulous. Along with the inspired pictures of nature and light provoking the imagination of Bulgarian readers, the travelogues also feature the rushed daily life of its people and the meetings of the authors with contemporary Indian intellectuals and politicians.
