Summary/Abstract: The subject is developed on the basis of Spanish diplomatic documents dating from the end of the 18th century. According to these, at the request of the General Congregation, the Spanish diplomat in Constantinople Juan Bolini accepted that the Catholic head for the regions of Sofia and Plovdiv act as his Deputy Consul. The analysis of the documents reveals interesting aspects of Spanish foreign policy at the end of the century. The short, but valuable, Spanish notes designate new, unknown elements from the history of the Eparchy of Sofia and Plovdiv. They prove the need of a more careful study of Spanish diplomacy in the Balkans related to the policy of the Holy See. The documents from this source can clarify not only many known and studied aspects of the relations between the various denominational groups in the Ottoman Empire, but also between Europeans and the peoples who were subjects of that empire.
