Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to highlight the way in which philosophical hermeneutics influences the contemporary discussion about theological method and theological epistemology and the way it can contribute to the deepening of our understanding of revelation by highlighting God’s Otherness. The first part of the article gives a short history of philosophical hermeneutics and shows its reception in the theological theories of D. Tracy and W. G. Jeanrond. The second part deals with the historical nature of revelation and its hermeneutical dimension, trying to understand and highlight the way the revelation is mediated through human language. It points thereby to the fi nite nature of the historical means of revelation, their tendency to reveal and hide at the same time showing thus the limited scope of our knowledge of God and God’s Otherness. The third part speaks about the “mystery” as a theological epistemological category that can be employed as an adequate means to speak about God, without concealing his Otherness.
