Summary/Abstract: The article presents a comparative analysis of employment and unemployment in the Bulgarian regions along the Lower Danube, namely the town of Veliko Tarnovo, the town of Ruse and the town of Silistra. The research aims to identify the problems associated with the analysed variables, as well as to find the appropriate measures to increase employment or to create sustainable conditions for its preservation and to reduce unemployment in the specified regions. The research shows that the main problems regarding employment and unemployment in the Bulgarian regions of the Lower Danube are mostly related to the decline of the working population as a result of negative demographic trends, depopulation, migration, decrease of the population with higher education, lack of large enterprises and so on. Various measures to increase employment and to reduce unemployment are proposed, the most important of which are: improvement of the educational structure of the workforce and continuing vocational training; infrastructure development; improved opportunities for absorption of EU funds; making the river Danube a pan-European transport corridor; hiring a cross-border workforce; encouraging labour mobility, etc.
