Summary/Abstract: The fundamental principles of international law of the Charter of the United Nations are mandatory and customary international law. They have a key importance for the stability of international relations. They are a valuable legal resource for smaller countries like Bulgaria. The Bulgarian Constitution obliges the State to comply with them. The article deals with the legal qualities and the current aspects of the fundamental principles of international law. These are the principles of sovereign equality, the peaceful resolution of disputes, the bona fide fulfilment of international obligations, the prohibition of the threat or use of force, non-interference in home affairs and the equality and self-determination of peoples.
