Mr Miniscule and the Whale by Julian Tuwim in the Translation of Miroslav Válek

Summary/Abstract: One of the translations that have participated in the reconstruction of expressive means of Slovak children´s poetry in the late fifties and sixties is Válek´s translation of poetry by Julian Tuwim, a file named Mr Miniscule and the Whale (1975). Children´spoetry of Julian Tuwin corresponds to the efforts of modern poetry since the poetism in Central Europe and the wider European context. One of its dominant features is concreteness. Several features connect poetry of M. Válek to the concretists. Language of the original text and translation is colloquial, the author uses direct speech.Concreteness, natural spoken language, expressive sound saturation and modern imagery based on contrast is used in the creation of modern Slovak children´s poetry that is based on the play of words, the most significant since the sixties of the 20th century. An important element quickening children´s poetry is the revitalization of phrases. Even in children´s art the author uses irony. In the creation of images in translation Válek uses an appropriate substitutions, he specifies and creates revealing rhymes that are euphonically rich as well as the entire text of the poem. In accordance with the original work he designs the poetic images on the metaphoric-metonymic basis – a boat from walnut shells, oars are matches etc. A journey of discovering a main character is accompanied by obstacles, but he copes with them with the humor leading sometimes to nonsense. The author points to fictitiousness of the artistic text unlike the mimetic presentation of reality in the traditional literature.
