Summary/Abstract: For most of us, World War I is the will of a small group of politicians and military leaders who have decided the fate of millions of people. Most of the time, the world’s first conflagration appears to us as a chain of struggle; going through the list of losses, it looks impressive, but nothing more. But we rarely go beyond statistics to see people and understand the profound challenges that have prompted many and anonymous people to be willing to even risk their lives for an ideal of national reintegration that some voices say many did not even understand it. This possibility is often provided by the testimonies of those who have watched the trench war. The fact is that this type of document comes from the family’s archive, that is, the diary of my mother’s grandfather, written in the events, which makes it even more interesting to perceive the emotions and feelings of those times in which the destiny of the country was built. These short passages in the memoirs of Captain Alexandru Olteanu, written in the wake of the first weeks of the war, are proof that the national ideal was far from just a target of narrow political elite. It was a great part of the sensitivity of middle class, hence, from one place to another, and to ordinary soldiers, to those usually called to make the ultimate sacrifice.
