Summary/Abstract: Bulgarian historiography lacks a comprehensive and analytical study dedicated to the Ankara agreements signed by Bulgaria and Turkey in 1925. Nevertheless, quite contradictory judgements can be found in the works of part of the authors engaged in studying Bulgarian-Turkish relations or international relations in the Balkans as a whole. The extremely positive ones find supportive arguments in the texts of two of the total of five documents that have become publicly known as „the Ankara agreements“, more specifically the Treaty of Friendship and the Convention of Settlement. The negative comments are based mostly on the attached Protocol, where the government of Alexander Tsankov made concessions on refugee issues on which previous cabinets had held back. This article presents the circumstances which caused Sofia to turn towards launching negotiations, as well as the reasons that led to concessions. In the second place, efforts have been made for a complete presentation of the texts of the agreements and the documents in favour of and against their ratification have been analysed which, I hope, will prove an initial attempt to reconcile the above-mentioned contradiction in Bulgarian historiography.
