Summary/Abstract: The Importance of Being Earnest is one of Oscar Wilde’s most famous works, a perfect representation of his social and cultural criticism as it reveals a very humorous approach of the aristocratic class of the Victorian Era. The play exposes the characters’ opinions on a variety of topics and it involves the audience with the abundance of paradoxes it presents. The famous witty comments that Wilde shares with the readers/audience make one think of the lying and deceit society had to face. The present article intends to explore the playwrights’ humour and irony revealing the layers of his work.
