Summary/Abstract: The sequence of events that erupted in Syria in March 2011 and then transformed into a civil war as a result of the armed intervention by the Assad Regime has created an intense wave of migration towards Turkey. Even though the refugees resided in border provinces and camps in the beginning, the Syrians left the camps and dispersed throughout almost the entire country as the civil war extended. In this study, it is intended to determine the factors that influence the preferences of residence of the Syrian refugees who consider Turkey as an escape route, being Erzurum, and to reveal their socio-economic characteristics, as well. In the study, face-to-face questionnaires conducted with 50 Syrian refugees who reside in different neighborhoods of Erzurum are used. All of the participants are either the heads of family or the persons who assume that role. The questionnaire results are analyzed by using frequency (f) and percentage (%). Within this context, it is revealed that 78% of the Syrians in Erzurum live in Yakutiye central district and mostly in Rabia Ana Neighborhood; in the neighborhoods where socio-economically middle and low income families constitute majority; in domiciles having low rental values; whereas nearly 60% of the Syrian refugees make a living with state and foundation aids, and the majority of them are uneducated and nonqualified individuals.
