Summary/Abstract: This paper describes Polish startups which cooperate with universities, scientists, have their own research and development laboratories, as well as those which patent their solutions or have scientists among their founders. It begins with the definition of a startup company compared to other forms of new ventures. The second part provides an overview on the status of cooperation between business and science in Poland based on the main indicators. The third part of the article looks at the startups that cooperate with science; the most interesting startups from this group are also described. The aim of the article is to extend the knowledge about the cooperation of Polish startups with the widely-defined world of science. The research does not confirm that startups that cooperate with science, patent or have scientists among their founders perform better than those that do not. The author claims that institutions which strive to improve the innovativeness of the Polish economy should create favourable conditions for dispersing their knowledge and experience among Polish entrepreneurs who are still sceptical about innovations.
