Gombrowicz with Sedgwick: A Recent Study by Błażej Warkocki

Summary/Abstract: Chmielewska examines the reception of Gombrowicz’s early work in the context of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s work. The basis for her analysis is Błażej Warkocki’s monograph Pamiętnik afektów z okresu dojrzewania: Gombrowicz – queer – Sedgwick [Memoirs of Affects from a Time of Immaturity Gombrowicz – Queer – Sedgwick, 2018]. Chmielewska analyses recent concepts within queer theory that enter into dialogue with classic names in psychoanalysis (Lacan, Žižek). Demonstrating that “homosexual desire” as constructed in psychoanalysis masks unacknowledged homophobia, she highlights the benefits of such an interpretation of Gombrowicz’s short-story collection Pamiętnik z okresu dojrzewania [published in English as Bacacay] and presents Warkocki’s book as an innovative contribution to Gombrowicz studies.
