Summary/Abstract: Sobol examines biographical and documentary works by Ukrainian émigrés from a comparative perspective. Her focus is on two writers whose experiences inform research on collective memory: Alexander Koshetz (conductor, composer and writer, 1875-1944) and Sofiia Yablonska (journalist, reporter, photographer, writer and feminist, 1907-1971). Sobol argues that one of the key challenges faced by émigrés from east- Slavic nations – Ukraine in particular – continues to be the free world’s indifference towards countries that have been freed but are still under threat. This is why the works of émigrés – not just from the preceding three waves but also from the growing forth wave of emigration, often associated with economic and educational motivations – are becoming particularly relevant objects of study.
