Idioms and Proverbs in Corpora

Summary/Abstract: While working on our dictionary, we have implemented certain features which, in our opinion, should increase the value of the dictionary, especially for encoding purposes. The most important of these features is the inclusion of definitions. In this article, we suggest two ways of improving bilingual phraseological dictionaries: (1) inclusion of cognitively truthful definitions of idioms and (2) explanation of semantic bridges between their literal and figurative senses. Consistent incorporation of these features is likely to lead to a significantl increase in the value of dictionaries and will help turn them into true learning tools.
