Summary/Abstract: The pre-images of digital literacy first appeared in literary texts composed before the start of the digital age and spread of online information distribution media. Two novels, William Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer’ (published in 1984) and ‘1984,’ George Orwell’s dystopia from 1949, especially stand out. The language modes used in Orwell’s novel mirror the increased speed of written communication, further, the related stylistic characteristics, the frequent use of abbreviations, as well as the tendency to omit interpunctions. They also highlight the unlocalizability and variability in written texts. ‘1Q84’ by Murakami Haruki traces back to Orwell’s novel, thus similar written language tools can be found in both works. Considering the mentioned literary works within a single framework greatly contributes to mapping the written language modes of digital literacy, defining their characteristics and becoming more aware of the impacts.
