Summary/Abstract: The following article presents the examples of the poetic imagery in the works of the nineteenth century poet Adam Stanisław Naruszewicz against the background of the rich tradition of allegorical thinking which the European culture was saturated with at that time. „Polish Horace”, as the poet’s contemporaries called him, was aware of how big an impact representing abstract notions, particularly moral ones, on audience’s imagination can be. His poetry testifies that he made use of this educational tool readily and skillfully. When it comes to portraying the characters who by means of the poet’s unique selection of words come to life, he distinguished himself by admirable creativity, as well as consistency. In the course of the disquisition the comparative study of the poet’s selected texts with the source materials in the fields of iconology, emblematic art, and ancient symbolism has been conducted. Although the text of the draft constitutes a mere contribution to the study of the issue, the author has managed to show distinct associations between the images created by Naruszewicz and the representations included in dictionaries and encyclopedias describing mythological deities, available iconologies and the ones published during the European Enlightenment, as well as artistic works.
