Innovation and the level of economic development of voivodships

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the research is to determine the ranking of voivodships in the field of economic innovativeness and development as well as to assess the relationship between these phenomena. The article presents theoretical fundamentals of issues connected with innovation and economic development. Attention was also paid to the impact of innovation on the region's economic development. In the first stage of the analysis, rankings of voivodships in terms of innovation and economic development for 2005 and 2015 were created using the methods of taxonomic ordering of objects. Subsequently, an attempt was made to assess the correlation between the two rankings using Spearman's correlation coefficients. Basing on literature study and own research results, the thesis that at present innovativeness is one of the most significant factors of growth and economic development was confirmed. Innovations, especially the crucial ones, serve as the driving force of growth and thus of economic development.
