Summary/Abstract: The speech delivered by American President Barack Obama at the Universityof Al Azhar in Cairo in June 2009 not only struck a sympathetic chord in the ‘ArabDawn’, but it also inspired local youth to embark on the spontaneous actions whichturned into the so-called Arab Spring, initiated by the events in Tunis and Cairoat the turn of 2010/2011. The subsequent withdrawal of US support for PresidentHosni Mubarak and the de facto approval of the takeover of power in Egypt bythe Muslim Brotherhood and President Muhammad Morsi seemed to indicatea change in US policy towards Egypt and the entire region. Therefore, it came asa shock for believer s in the American support for democratic changes in Egypt andthe region when in 2014 the Obama administration approved of the army taking power in Egypt. This response exemplified the reality, namely that the primarygoal of US policy in the Arab world is not so much to advance democratizationbut, rather, to maintain political and economic stability in the region as well asguarantee Israel’s security.
