The social dimension in designing sustainable city development

Summary/Abstract: The article contains considerations on the relations between socially sustainable development of cities and urban planning. Expressing the conviction that social balance makes one of the fundamental elements of sustainable development of a city, it is pointed at the same time to the fact that urban designing which is directed towards realization of goals of sustainable development may not win social acceptance. The author indicates different attitudes towards defining socially sustainable development of rural areas. It is also attempted to determine which elements of urban designing hold special significance for its realization, paying particular attention to the spatial form of cities and the question of accessibility of public spaces. The considerations are concluded with a discussion of socially-conditioned principles behind designing cities.
