Summary/Abstract: The article refers to an inspiring work of A. Lisowski published 15 years ago, entitled The Janus face of suburbanization (2005). It continued the discourse on suburbanization as a dynamic process, constantly shaping local and regional settlement systems, especially of large cities. An attempt is made to take another look at the evolution (periodization) of the suburbanization process and the relationship of the central city and the suburban area. The main emphasis was placed on new trends in the development of suburban areas, defined by the common concept of post-suburbanization. The features of traditional suburbs as city products and post-suburbs as products of globalization were analyzed. The article ends with research questions related to current suburbanization trends observed mainly in Western countries.
