Summary/Abstract: In today’s Europe, Thomas Mann’s concern that one day there might exist a German Europe worries no one, Germany offers a model for clarifying and assuming the past, which could be defined as a “negative nationalism”, a re-distribution of past’s burdens. There are analysts who consider Germany’s model as a “dictatorship of remembrance”, and the country’s means to be redeemed form the pain caused by the parents’ deeds/crimes. But what is a “European culture of remembrance”? How can the appeal for a European critical approach of the past be justified? Which is the particular trait of such a “European remembrance”? These are the questions that the author answers in this essay.
