Essence and Aims of the Family Policy

Summary/Abstract: This article considers fundamental problems of theory and practice concerning family policy. The term "family policy", its nature and sphere, is enlightened as connected to the multiaspect of its object — the family, which explains the lack of a generally accepted definition. The aricle points to some basic characteristics of the contemporary family policy that explain its essence, ideas and aims. Also, the need for such a policy is shown. The problem of the links among family policy, social policy, and demographic policy is considered, thus adding to the coception of the family policy, its character and principles that should be used for its construction. The diveristy and richness of family policy is discussed also what its basic aims could be. Four main groups of basic aims are delineated by underlining the difficulties in their choice and accents. The suggested detailed analysis of these general large aims is connected to the problems and needs of the contemporary society. Today's practice in some countries is discussed. In fact, it is shown that through its multiple aims the family policy can model and develop society in one or the other direction.
