Ella Negruzzi (1876-1948), the First Female Barrister in Romania

Summary/Abstract: Ella Negruzzi, niece of our first great modern prose writer, Constantin Negruzzi, was born at the Negruzzi’s estate in Hermeziu, Iași County. She attended the courses of the Faculty of Law from the University of Iași becoming the first female accepted by the Bar with the right to plead in court. This right was obtained after several time consuming trials against the Bar of Iași that denied her the admission because as a woman, she did not have the right to vote and as a barrister she had to have this right. During the First World War she acted as a nurse in the hospitals of Iași as well as on the front line, becoming a militant for the rights and emancipation of Romanian women. In 1936 she founded the Association “Frontul Feminin”, for protecting the economic, political and social rights of women. The right to vote and the right to submit their candidature were her ideals. In 1917 she signed the Petition of Romanian women to the Senate of Romania for granting political and civil rights to women. In 1930 she submitted her candidature and was elected local councilor in Bucharest. She wrote feminist articles in various legal journals, held conferences in numerous cities of the country, at the radio, gave interviews and was an active militant. She died in 1948 and was buried in the family’s sepulcher from Bellu Cemetery, in Bucharest.
