Summary/Abstract: The XXI Century is an arena of dynamic and turbulent changes which we are not only witnesses to but also participants in. These changes are not only caused by new arising challenges for organisations within certain markets in certain countries, but are also by the behaviour of said organisations. Contemporary economic conditions dictate that enterprises should strive to understand existent global business rules and the changes within the methods and strategies of managing them. The main objective of the article is to present the theoretical foundations of the concept an enterprise and its inextricable link to business. The author condenses the definition of an enterprise for the reader, explores what the autonomy of the company is and what is the purpose of an enterprise its self-financing methods. Polish and English literature studies were selected as research methods, which led to a synthesis of different authors’ views towards these topics, within should be considered very important pointers for companies to succeed, not only within their home markets but also in the global market.
