Summary/Abstract: Negotiations on the r Negotiations on the recast of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) progress slowly, with heated political debates on the likely impacts the CEAS will have on the protection standards enforced by EU MS. The high migratory pressure at EU’s external borders has initially fuelled the debate, however the current diminished numbers of irregular migrants and asylum seekers have shifted political pressure from the reform of the CEAS. The legal implications still remain, and so does the lack of harmonization of the national asylum systems between the respective Member States. How will the CEAS reform affect the existing protection guarantees offered by MS to those seeking shelter on their territory? Is the CEAS reform just smoke and mirrors, trying to dissimulate the increasing focus placed on security by Fortress Europe? These are just some of the questions the authors are trying to address, while analyzing the Malian case in the wider context of European protection standards.
