Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to present students’ opinions on the value of parenting in their lives. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The main purpose of the research has been defined through the question: What is the value of parenting for the student respondents? A questionnaire-based survey was implemented and the research literature was analysed and synthesized. THE PROCCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: Based on empirical data, the article shows different aspects of parenting: its value expressed by a certain level, students’ opinions on family tasks and roles, contemporary problems and difficulties in parenting, attitudes and opinions on parenting and characteristics of a parent, as well. RESEARCH RESULTS: The value of parenting in students’ lives was analysed in relation to such variables as sex, place of living, age, family type and structure. The respondents point out medium level of parenting. They associate parenting with high expenses and giving up professional career. Furthermore, they draw attention to the issue of single parenting (relatively high divorce rate) and identify responsibility as a very important aspect of parenting. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: According to the research findings, the students express positive attitudes towards parenting. Parenting is valued (medium level). The respondents’ perception of parenting is mature; to be a mum or to be a dad is not a temporary desire, but a consequence and a foundation for a regular family. The knowledge of parenting should be included in the system of education, from primary, through secondary to higher level of education (a “social” course incorporated into each area of study).
