Summary/Abstract: If a tourist, a Prague citizen in a hurry, a student of the nearby University of Economics or a random traveller were to get off into the hall of Prague Main Train Station, they would probably head for a tram stop almost 300 m away. A less than tempting promenade of Vrchlického sady park, not for nothing dubbed with the outlaw epithet “Sherwood”, however, calls for a quicker pace and wary looks. Almost unnoticed by the thousands of passers-by, it remains a monument whose artistic and ideological ambitions before 1989 undoubtedly aimed higher than merely to accompany the few people sitting here and there on the benches or in the park. The artwork entitled Fraternity (Sbratření in Czech) by the sculptor Karel Pokorný, however, despite a certain shabbiness today, unveils a series of remarkable moments in its past which reflect our post-war history, not only in terms of art.
