Summary/Abstract: During the Trump presidency, the only constants in US foreign policy seemed to be uncertainty, indecision, irrationality, and repeated changes of direction. Any coherent strategy is marked by the personal and political interests of President Trump. His political perspective is anchored in a transactional, business-oriented vision that does not take into account previous commitments to the nations of the Middle East and North Africa or the moral duty of the United States to defend factions aspiring for peace and democracy in Syria, such as Kurds. Trump’s abandonment of these forces was tantamount to ceding the US initiative in Syria to the Russian Federation, Turkey and Iran. The election of Biden as president will mean a return to the traditional US policy towards the Russian Federation and could lead to a decrease in the resources allocated by Moscow to projects in the Middle East.
