Summary/Abstract: The Russian Federation seeks to compensate for internal problems by promoting an expansionist country project and building a profile of “political, economic and technological” power. The military intervention of the Russian Federation in Syria has deep reasons, Moscow considering the al-Assad regime the only legitimate authority in Syria and the only government that can still facilitate the projection of Russian influence in the Middle East and North Africa. For Putin, however, Syria is just one phase in the great game he is playing with the United States in the Middle East, meaning that maintaining a strong presence in Syria is more important than reaching an agreement. If the international situation allows, the Russian Federation will act to obtain a status of hegemonic power in the region for the purpose of de facto control over the Mediterranean Sea and, implicitly, the exit to the Atlantic Ocean.
