Summary/Abstract: Introduction: Continuous education of health professionals in the context of lifelong learning has become necessity for professional training as well as a guarantee of patient safety. Objective: The study is aimed to find out the motivation factors that influence nursesꞌ lifelong learning. Methods: The theoretical basis for the research was Maslow’s pyramid of needs. This research has been administered using non-standardized questionnaire. This survey was conducted among 110 nurses, of whom 68% were working in secondary health care facilities in Kosice region. In terms of completed education, 73% of nurses had the highest level of education (Higher vocational education and University education 1st stage, 2nd stage, 3rd stage). Up to 64% nurses had 10 or more years of work. The average age of nurses was 40.5 years. We used the SPSS 16 program to calculate descriptive statistics and present the results. Results: The survey found that the most important motivating factor in nurses´ lifelong learning – to obtain credit for education 65% - is stemming from the first level of physiological needs. According to the score achieved, the highest motivation factors for all nurses in our survey were the self-fulfilment’s needs, physiological needs, and confidence and security’s needs. Conclusion: According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, people must satisfy their basic needs at the bottom of the pyramid before they can satisfy higher needs.
