Summary/Abstract: The crusade expedition initiated by Pope Innocent III (1198-1216) to free Jerusalem, known in history as the Fourth Crusade, brought the Western knights under the walls of Constantinople. At that time, the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire was Alexios III, an Emperor completely lacking the art of ruling. Because the Emperor rebuked the claims of the Western knights to give up the throne in favor of his nephew Alexios IV, they attacked Constantinople. After some minor conflicts with the Western knights, he gave up the fight. Terrified with the thought of being betrayed by his men, he leaves Constantinople, taking with him the imperial seals. He was hoping to continue the battle with the Latins from outside the walls of the great city. In the end, he will be tonsured a monk at the command of the Greek Emperor of Niceea, Theodore I Lascaris.
