Childhood Chronic Illnessas a Difficult Situation for Family, Which Requires Support at the Local Level

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problems of child’s chronic illness as a difficult situation for the family, which requires support at the local level. The aim is to present and discuss selected problem areas in the social functioning of the family with a chronically ill child and the need to support it at the local level. The text includes issues concerning the scale of occurrence of chronic illnesses in children and adolescents, problems faced by families of children with such conditions, and relevant social support. The forms of assistance that are provided by institutions for families with a child with chronic illness are also presented. The text encourages to reflect on the existing system of support for such families. It is observed that the current support offer is insufficient and limited, which means that not all those in need benefit from it. Consequently, the conclusions are drawn to the need to look for new forms of family support at the local level.
