Summary/Abstract: Many of the clergymen who founded the Bulgarian Exarchate in the 19th century are almost unknown and their contribution to church work has been poorly studied. Among them is the first Bulgarian bishop in the Diocese of Polenin and the first Bulgarian metropolitan in the Diocese of Pirot or Nišava – Parthenius of Zograf. The article examines the main stages in the life of the clergyman, including unknown, unpublished documents from the so-called Znepolski Peev Archive. It analyzes the complex relations between Parthenius and the municipality of Pirot, which led to a conflict and the withdrawal of the clergyman from the administration of the Diocese of Nisava. The conflict has an unacceptable interpretation in Serbian historiography, criticized in the statement. During his not very long life, Parthenius became actively involved not only in the church movement and the confrontation with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, in the common efforts for modern Bulgarian education in Macedonia, but also in the creation of the new, modern Bulgarian written language. Parthenius' contribution to the development of Bulgarian Orthodox literature as part of the new literature of the nineteenth century is also emphasized.
