Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the book entitled „The MunicipalGovernment of the City of Bucharest 1831–1862” authored by Elena-Iuliana Marin in 2019. The volume comprises a presentationof the institution, and chapters on the Romanian administration reflected in the Organic Regulations, Justice on the way to modernity, Problems, causes and responsibilities of the Bucharest City Council1831–1862 (with very interesting references to taxation, the problemof foreign citizens, recruitment, urbanism etc., showing that the city of Bucharest was in permanent contact with the State Treasury, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Consulates of foreign states and the Police Agency). The issues covered are described against the background of the turbulent historical period, with many internationalevents involving the Romanian Principalities: the Russo-Ottoman War ended with the Treaty of Adrianople in 1829, the period ofmilitary occupation by the Russian, the period of regulatory rule,the rulers appointed per the Treaty of Balta Liman2, the Crimean War, the Congress of Paris, the 1858 Convention and the Union ofPrincipalities in 1859, the birth of the modern Romanian state and its institutions. Bucharest, the Capital City of Wallachia and afterwards of Greater Romania, witnessed all key historical events and continued its existence through the combined effort of modernized institutions including the Municipal Government.
