The Shadow Player: the Pivotal Character of Sub-Saharan Africa and Its Implications for Euro-Atlantic Security

Summary/Abstract: This is a review of A.I.C. Popescu’s book entitled Jucătorul din umbră. Caracterul pivotal al Africii Subsahariene şi implicaţiile acestuia asupra securităţii euroatlantice (The Shadow Players. The Pivotal Character of Sub-Saharan Africa and Its Implications for Euro-Atlantic Security) published by the Military Publishing House in 2017. The reviewer highlights the multiple merits of the volume: the interdisciplinary approach of a highly ardent albeit poorly publicized topic, the treatment of the Sub-Saharan African region as a unitary geopolitical area, the case studies on the military and political actions of local and foreign authorities, which have contributed to the establishment of the pivotal character of the region under analysis. The book is also a premiere in the field of Romanian research on SubSaharan Africa.
