Summary/Abstract: The anonymous author of the 11th century Tale of Boris and Gleb, emphasises the two saints’ voluntary acceptance of death after the example of Christ. In the Tale appears for the first time one of the leading characteristics of Russian Christianity-humility and the acceptance of fate in imitation of deeds of Christ. The 15th century Legend of Peter and Fevronia, in contrast to the Tale, supplies many everyday details from the life of these saint-spouses. The composition of the narrative is complex, containing legendary folklore motifs. The elements of traditional Byzantine vitae can only be found in the final part of the Legend which ends with a description of the hero’s and heroine’s death and posthumous miracles.
