Summary/Abstract: The present study marks out the main features, which have influenced the evolution of the port competitional landscape in the last two centuries. The final results of the study suggest that, in most of the cases, the port efficiency can be substantially improved by providing a higher quality of related port services and by stimulating competition among port key players. In this respect, the features of the shipping industry (mainly linked by business’s great degree of flexibility and promiscuity due to exclusively international characteristics of the services) are imposing the implementation of marketing competing strategies based on the ground rules of free market economy in dealing with public-private relationship.
