AN ANALYSIS OF NOVEL TRANSLATIONS RENDERED INTO OTTOMAN TURKISH FROM THE SECOND CONSTITUTIONAL PERIOD UNTIL THE LANGUAGE REFORM WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF

Summary/Abstract: Novel is a fictional literary genre that was introduced into the Turkish literature through translation during the Tanzimat Period for the first time. Since this genre was widely popular in Ottoman society, hundreds of novels were translated into Ottoman Turkish from Western languages, beginning with the Tanzimat Period until the Language Reform. This paper aims to analyse translations of these novels produced during the time between the Second Constitutional Period and the Language Reform in the light of the information presented in prefaces, epilogues and book covers of these translations, within the framework of translation studies. In order to gather research data, novels translated during the mentioned period will be examined to detect the ones with prefaces and epilogues. Texts presented at the beginning and the end of translated works, which are intended to be informative and considered as prefaces and epilogues in this paper, will be transcribed and quotes from these texts will be presented through intralingual translation as necessary. Theoretical framework of this paper is based on the Israeli translation scholar Gideon Toury’s concept of “preliminary norms”. Based on prefaces and epilogues, it is aimed to identify translation policies of the mentioned period by examining these two issues: factors that define how translators choose source texts/writers, and whether target texts are translated from original source language or interlanguage.
