Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problem of assimilation of German loanwords in Russian from the point of view of gender. The main trends in the development of the category of gender in the language from which the words are taken are also stressed. Loanwords lose in the Russian language means of expressing grammatical gender typical for the language from which they are taken. The gender of German loan-nounsis established according to rules governing present day literary Russian and depends on the form and meaning of the words. While the semantic element is in operation the structure of the word often changes. Neuter gender of German nouns is usually changed in Russian into masculine gender, and feminine gender into masculine and feminine gender, etc. The most productive category in the Russian language is the masculine gender. Hence the greatest number of loans occurs in this gender.
