Summary/Abstract: The author of the article traces the history of the word ‘озорной’ in literary Russian comprising the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. The facts mentioned in the articleallow us to conclude that in the period of time following the year 1917 certain semanticand stylistic changes of the word under discussion occur. The nineteenth century meaningof this word, namely ‘easy to brawl or inclined to commit an act of infamy’ entered the everyday language. Then it changed its meaning into ‘to play pranks or to poke fun’. In 1950’s and 1960’s the word ‘озорной’ attains the meaning ‘frolic or rompish or wanton’. The semantic processes which the word ‘озорной’ undergoes are accompanied by some stylistic and emotional changes. The basic changes in the semantics of the word have been mentioned in the dictionaries of the Russian language.
