ON THE INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL BOUNDARIES OF PHRASEOLOGY (ON THE BASIS OF SOVIET LEXICOLOGY)

Summary/Abstract: Based on a rich material collected by Soviet lexicologists, the author tries to define his ownattitude towards the problem of internal and external boundaries of phraseology and towardsthe classification of phraseological units. He treats phraselogy in its general sense as a part included in the content of the units studied by the general linguistic theory of cliché combinations. Three basic types of phraselogical units can be distinguished on the basis of their semantic properties: idiomatic units (idioms), phrasematic units (phrasemes), and phraseological units (phrases). Each of the types can be further divided into structural-semantic subtypes.
