Summary/Abstract: The objective of this study was to build and validate a multidimensional scale to assess emotional responses to emotional infidelity, based on the evolutionary theory (Darwin, 1859) and the cognitive evaluation theory (Lazarus & Lazarus, 1994). The instrument is called The Emotional Responses to Emotional Infidelity Scale (EREIS). For this instrument, the construct validity involved an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), by analysing the main components and using the Varimax rotation method. The factors were selected and named by combining the results obtained following the factorial analysis with a theoretical base on the theory of emotions. The final solution of the exploratory factor analysis included seven factors which explained 59.70% of the variance of the 25 items. In order to identify the adequacy level of the factorial solution, we performed a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Within this analysis, several models were tested, and in the end the values of the indicators showed the superiority of the model with seven uncorrelated factors: guilt/ acceptance, sadness, dread, anger, fear, jealousy, pain. In exploring the convergent validity, significant correlations were identified between the scores obtained in EREIS and other tools used in order to assess emotional responses. Finally, the results obtained suggest that EREIS is a valid measure for emotional responses to emotional infidelity.
